- Polypropylene (Polypropene) – The polypropylene material used to build a rope can be made of monofilament or multifilament fibers. Polypropylene is subject to chain degradation from exposure to sunlight and needs to be made with an UV-adsorbing additive if it is consistently used in sunlight. It will degrade through oxidation at high temperatures and has a low melting point. Polypropylene shouldn’t be used where friction generated by use of the rope is an issue. This rope is very light and floats in the water. Polypropylene is resistant to most chemicals.
Polypropylene line is the least expensive of the synthetic lines, however, it deteriorates quickly from ultra-violet rays and wear. It is not a good line for dock line because its hard surface tends to slip from cleats and can cause cuts if it runs free through your hands. It floats, so it is good for rescue lines. It is also appropriate for ski lines, dinghy painters, short mooring pendants or other applications where you want to be able to see the line on top of the water. Not for use as dock, anchor or towing lines.
This is the only manmade fiber that is affected by sunlight and thus needs various additives during making. Polypropylene can be made from a single filament fiber or a multi filament-fiber. A polypropylene rope is not used where more of friction is there. Resistant to most of the chemicals, the ropes made from these materials are lighter and float on water.
